Plant Identification and Culture

Once a month, every month, Diane Pierce will introduce students to 30 new plants & include: Latin and common names, plant descriptions, important growing characteristics, cultural requirements, landscape function and pest and disease prevention tips. Diane will take you for a walk about to see how the plants studied are used in the Glendale Gardens. Class size will be limited to 20 students.

Habitat Restoration Workshops

This 2-session course with Manon Tremblay is a project-based learning experience designed to promote awareness & knowledge of native species. It will include hands-on field work. Students are to dress accordingly; rubber boots, work clothes & work gloves, rain gear may be required. All tools, text & material will be provided.

This first session will cover native plant identification. It will begin in the classroom then move into the Glendale Conservation Park.
Students will learn to identify native species & will create a scrapbook journal with drawings & plant matter including leaves, seed heads, bark & other identifiers. Also covered will be cultural requirements, traditional uses & a plant's role in the ecosystem.

The second session (Sunday September 19th) will cover habitat restoration and the reclaiming of disturbed and degraded land & the reintroduction of native species, including native shrubs, trees & edible bulbs.

Design a Winter Garden

While the rest of the country is busy shoveling snow, we in Victoria can have gardens awash in colour. Rafe Mooney, a Pacific Horticulture College graduate & devoted Doris Page Winter Garden volunteer will provide an overview of plant choices that will brighten & enliven your garden in winter!

Design layout suggestions & the top ten winter plants will be covered, with a focus on blooms, fragrance, foliage & bark. As continuity is equally important, a tour of the garden will show another season.

Fall Plant Sale A wide range of plants will be available for sale including unique shrubs and perennials propagated from the Glendale Gardens collections. Introduction to Ethnobotany

Charles Knighton, head horticulturalist of the Royal BC Museum, will introduce students to the historically important plants of the Saanich First Nation. He will cover how the plants were harvested and how they were used for food, clothing, medicine and tool making. The course will include a guided tour of the recently completed Ethnobotany Trail at Glendale Gardens.

Zen & Now

From artist and garden designer Robin Hopper comes this slightly irreverent or tongue-in-cheek slide and lecture presentation that traces the development of Japanese Gardens from their beginnings as interpretations of Chinese painting to a contemporary Japanese art form, then beyond to a personal interpretation of the five basic Japanese garden styles in the Metchosin garden of Chosin Pottery.

Mason Bee Workshop

Attracting mason bees to your garden is very important but so is learning how to keep the bees healthy. Entomologist Gord Hutchings will cover the basics of mason bee husbandry, including cocoon extraction, condo cleaning & cleaning techniques that will rid the cocoons of mites. Students can bring in their bee houses & learn with hands-on techniques.

Introduction to Basketry using Northwest materials Sorry, this event/class is full. This workshop with Joan Carrigan will introduce participants to weaving with western red cedar bark, west coast sweetgrass, willow bark and beargrass. Joan will cover harvesting & preparation, weaving patterns including regular & reverse twining, twill weave and x-lashing. The materials are easy to work with & participants will enjoy their lovely baskets for years to come.

The Sustainable Gardener The program has been developed to appeal to those who wish to acquire the skills needed to create ornamental and food gardens that will be in keeping with the philosophies of sustainability. 3 sessions with Philip Young, covering all aspects of fruit production will take place in early January 2011.

Landscape Design: Studio Sessions

In this 7-session course, guided by instructor Barb Kohlman, students will draft a concept plan & work on a detailed planting plan for a landscape project of their choice (under 1/2 acre). Students will be required to provide their own drawing equipment and must bring to the first class a bird's-eye sketch of their house and property complete, if possible, with measurements of property lines, all key buildings and landscape features and their distances from one another.
