Zen Garden
The Zen Garden is the latest creation to grace the popular Takata Japanese Garden at Glendale Gardens.$30,000 was raised through many generous donations from lovers of Japanese gardens. Greenfield Design was given the challenge of creating a Canadian version of a traditional Zen garden.
Mossy boulders, raked white gravel, a 300 year old lodgepole pine, pruned and shaped shrubs and corsican mint groundcover combine to provide peaceful allure.
The garden is enclosed on two sides by a traditional capped plaster wall. On the west side a 9 metre long Lonicera nitida hedge is backed by a stand of fast growing Miscanthus giganteus, the tallest of the non-bamboo grasses. The north side is bounded by a 12 metre long arbour upon which Wisteria sinensis is slowly growing.Like any garden, it must be continually weeded and pruned to maintain its pristine appearance. These duties are carried out by Curator Bob Clarke and his faithful group of volunteers.
Pacific Horticulture College students add their youthful enthusiasm and creativity every year to projects which add to the ambience of the entire Japanese garden.
Come sit a while on a cedar bench and enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility of our Zen garden.
